Literature Text

At Rita's home. Copper and Balto came to visit her, looking at the front porch.

Copper: Rita! Rita!

Balto: Oh Miss Rita, Ma'am! Miss Rita.

The two looked a little concerned, looking through the area. Then, as Copper entered the yard, he noticed an unhappy Rita slumped onto the porch as he smiled.

Copper: There you are. Good morning, Rita! It's a nice, sunny, bright day, uh, today.

Balto, noticing the two dogs, had also arrived, smiling to her.

Balto: Why, Miss Rita, is something wrong?

Copper: Yes, tell us Rita. If somebody's been mistreating you...

She looked up before shaking her head.

Rita: Oh no, Copper. It's something I've done, I guess.

Balto: (surprised) You?

Rita: It must be. Chrono and Marle are acting so...

She then heard Marle's humming while the two male dogs, looking through the window, looked concerned.

Balto: Chrono and Marle?

Copper: Hush man!

The three began heading to the greenhouse, with Copper looking at her.

Copper: Now, Rita, get on with the details.

Rita: Well I first noticed it the other day when Chrono came home.

In the past, Rita was looking through the window. Just then, she smiled, spotting Chrono coming home. The brown dog headed to her master, through the doggy door. However, she noticed Chrono passing her.

Chrono: Down, Rita. Down.

She looked confused. However, she tried playing with him, only for Chrono to pass her, entering the house. The female dog looked confused as Chrono's voice was heard.

Chrono's Voice: Marle, Marle? Are you all right?

Marle's Voice: Of course I am, why shouldn't I be?

The brown dog entered through the doggy door as she began to head to them.

Chrono: I just can't help worrying. After all, in your condition, alone here all day walking that dog.

Just then, she stopped, looking shocked. In the present, her friends looked surprised at what they just heard.

Copper: "That dog?"

Balto: That dog.

Rita: (sadly) He's never called me that before.

Copper: Well now Rita, I wouldn't worry my own head aboot that. Remember. They're only humans after all.

Balto: That's right Miss Rita. As my grandfather, Old Reliable used to say...um...Don't know if I've ever mentioned Old Reliable before.

Copper: (sighs) Yes, you have, Balto. Frequently.

Balto: oh, yeah.

Rita: (sadly) But now Marle is...Well, we've always enjoined pour afternoon romp together. But yesterday...

In the past, Rita put down the leash near the humming Marle, who was knitting something. The dog looked a bit confused, looking at Marle before she noticed, putting the leash to the side.

Marle: No Rita. No walk today.

Then, Rita took her ball, trying to make the blond woman try to play with her.

Marle: (sighs) No Rita. Not now.

She hummed more as a wool ball fell down from her. Rita began trying to play with it happily. However, Marle gasped, noticing what she was doing, flicking her ear, causing the dog to back to the corner.

Marle: (angrily) Rita. Drop that Rita. Drop it, I say!

She was nearly hit by Marle before the woman took back the yarn ball, which made Rita worry. Back in the present, she looked a bit worried.

Rita: It didn't hurt really. But Marle has never struck me before.

Both male dogs looked at one another. However, they both smiled as they nodded, then looked at her.

Copper: Now Rita. Do no take it too seriously. After all, at a time like this...

Balto: Why, yes, you see, Miss Rita. There comes a time in the life of all humans when, uh...Well as they put it, uh, the birds and the bees. Or, well, uh, the stork you know? Uh, no? Well, uh...

Copper only sighed, shaking his head before looking at Rita.

Copper: What he's tryin' to say, Rita, is Marle is expecting a small youngling.

Rita: (confused) "Youngling?"

Balto: He means a baby, Miss Rita.

Rita: Oh! (concerned) Um...what's a baby?

At that moment, as the two dogs began to answer, Dodger with his crew were passing by.

Copper: Well, they. They resemble humans.

Dodger: (to his friends) Whoa, hold it.

Tito: What?

The four looked as they watched Rita being explained by the two.

Balto: But I'd say a might smaller.

Copper: Aye, and they walk on all fours.

Balto: And if I remember correctly they bawl a lot.

Copper: Aye and they are very expensive. You'll not be permitted to play with it.

Balto: But they're mighty sweet.

Copper: And very, very soft.

Dodger only chuckled before he motioned the others to enter, with himself entering first.

Dodger: Yes, a cute little bundle chuckles of trouble. Yes they scratch, pinch, pull ears. Ah but shucks, any dog can take that. It's what they do to your happy home. Move it over, will ya friend? Home wreckers! That's what they are!

Tito: Yeah, every time you're near it, bam, they try to hit you away from it, and when you get too close, they toss you out!

Francis: But they are wonderful beings.

Tito: Not where you came from, Franky!

Francis: (glares) For the hundreth time, my name is Francis!

Copper: (narrows) Look here, you four. Who are you to barge in?

Einstein: Um...barge in where?

Dodger: The voices of experience, buster. Just wait till Junior gets here.

Tito: Yeah, we've been through that before we got kicked out of home and food and such.

The lead dog smirked as he began demonstrating, scratching.

Dodger: You get the urge for a nice comfortable scratch and... (falsetto voice) "Put that dog out. He'll get fleas all over the baby!"

Einstein: That's how I got out of my own home. Ain't that neat?

Francis only groaned.

Dodger: (to the others/normal voice) And you start barking at some strange mutt barking.

He barked loudly, spooking both Copper and Balto.

Dodger: (falsetto voice) "Stop that racket, you'll wake the baby!" (normal voice) And then they hit you in the room and board department.

As he spoke next, an imaginary bowl with some beef appeared, much to Rita's delight.

Dodger: Remember those nice juicy cuts of beef?

However, as she was going to eat it, it turned to baby food, much to her confusion.

Dodger: Forget ‘em. Leftover baby food.

Then, she looked, noticing the imaginary fireplace appearing.

Dodger: And that nice warm bed by the fire?

She lied down, smiling comfortably. Just then, thunder flash, waking her for the moment before noticing herself out in the rain in a dog house.

Dodger: A leaky doghouse.

As the imagination ended, Rita looked more worried.

Rita: (worried) Oh dear.

Copper: (frowns) Don't listen, Rita. No human is that cruel!

Tito: Oh you think so? Try living with people who are poor, then you'll see who's cruel!

Balto: Of course not, Miss Rita. Why, everybody knows a dog's best friend is his human.

Dodger only laughed a little before smirking.

Dodger: Oh come now fellas. You haven't fallen for that old line now, have ya?

The two upper class dogs only glared at the four.

Copper: True, and we've no need for mongrels and their radical ideas.

Francis: I use to live in a respectable home once, too, you know!

Copper: Off with ya now! Off with ya!

Dodger: Okay Swiper.

Copper: The name's Copper.

Tito: Okay Copy.

Copper: (glares) Copper to you!

Dodger: Okay, okay, okay. Come on, boys.

Tito only looked concerned.

Tito: Hey, uh, can I get the name of that poodle that lives across from you guys?

Balto: (angrily) OUT!!

Tito: (walking away) Okay, okay, yeesh!

The four dogs began to leave the area. As Dodgers was about to be the last one to leave, he looked back at the three dogs.

Dodger: But remember this, Dog Gal, a human heart has only so much room for love and affection. When a baby moves in, the dog moves out.

With that, he left the area, leaving Rita astonished and worried.
Rita learns about what's going on with Chrono and Marle, all while the Downtown Dogs appear and give out their own interpretation.
